A milking robot is the most expensive single machine most dairy farms will ever buy, and almost nobody publishes a price for one. Lely, DeLaval and GEA all sell through dealers who quote per farm. What does exist, and what this guide uses, is a combination of university extension figures and real listings where a specific machine carried a specific number.
What a new box costs
The most cited independent figure comes from University of Maryland Extension, where Lexi Urbanz and Fabiana F. Cardoso wrote in December 2023 that a robot able to milk 50 to 70 cows costs $150,000 to $200,000 per robot. Trade and lender write-ups published since put the *installed* number higher — roughly $170,000-$220,000 once basic installation is included, and $200,000-$250,000 per robot once barn modifications, concrete and the milk house are counted. Those higher figures come from commercial publishers rather than extension services, so treat the extension band as the reliable anchor and the rest as directional.
One unusually concrete data point exists. In October 2025 a seller in Washington State listed a new, never-installed GEA R9500 two-robot package at $270,000 — $135,000 per box — after the original installation was cancelled. That package was not a bare robot. It included two left-hand MonoBoxes, a supply unit, dual milk filter, a 120-gallon buffer tank with milk house valving, a Champion 10 hp air compressor with desiccant dryer, DairyPlan C21 herd management, a sort gate and 130 CowScout activity tags with rumination — enough to milk about 130 cows across the two boxes.
Read that $135,000 as a floor rather than list. A cancelled order has to clear, and the seller is competing with a dealer who can offer financing and a service contract. But it is a real number attached to real hardware, which is more than most published "robotic milking cost" pages can say.
The used ladder
Used listings are where this category becomes legible, because sellers name the model, the install year and often the hours. These were all live on US classified boards in the past twelve months:

The A5 system included the central unit, air compressor, tank and robot pipes, buffer tank, plate cooler, cow brushes and collars, and was dealer-serviced quarterly. The A3 package prices the robots at $9,375 each, the Grazeway gates at $2,000 each and the CRS control with a Mueller washer at $3,750, so the buyer can see exactly what each piece contributes.
What actually moves the number
Cows per box. Manufacturers rate 50-70 cows. The GEA package above targets 130 cows across two boxes — 65 each — which sits at the top of the realistic range for high-producing Holsteins. Budget per cow, not per robot: extension-band hardware at 60 cows per box works out to roughly $2,500-$3,300 per cow before barn work.
Left hand or right hand. Every serious listing specifies it. A left-hand box in a barn plumbed for right-hand costs you the difference in construction, and it narrows your resale market later.
The peripherals are not optional. Buffer tank, vacuum pump, air compressor, plate cooler, milk filtration, teat dip pumps, herd-management software and activity collars appear in every complete listing. A quote that covers only the box is not a quote for a working system.
Parts horizon. One A3 listing states plainly that Lely stopped making parts for that model in spring 2025. On a machine you expect to run for a decade, ask the dealer how long the model has been in the line and what the parts commitment is — it matters more to the resale value than hours do.
Where to buy
New systems come through the manufacturer's dealer network, and the dealer is also your service contract, so judge the dealer as hard as the brand. Used boxes trade on dairy-specific classified boards and through equipment dealers who list them with reference numbers; complete systems with peripherals sell faster and price better per box than orphaned robots.
