How It Works

Pet waste: The most dreaded failure mode for robot vacuum owners — the robot smearing dog feces across the floor — is now genuinely prevented. Roborock's system specifically flags "animal feces" as a separate category with behavioral constraints that prioritize non-contamination above cleaning coverage.

Cable management: Instead of simply avoiding cables (and often getting tangled anyway), robots now recognize cable clusters and can navigate around them without entering the cable zone, then return to clean around the perimeter.

Spill differentiation: The robot can now tell the difference between a dry debris spill and a liquid spill, adjusting its cleaning approach (vacuum vs. mop) automatically.

The Privacy Dimension

On-device processing means no images are transmitted to cloud servers. The robot identifies objects locally without recording or transmitting video. This addresses a significant consumer privacy concern that has historically slowed adoption of camera-equipped robots.

What Is Not Yet Solved

Object identification is still imperfect. Items lying flat on the floor (rugs, small items, clothing) are less reliably identified than upright objects. The system works best with good lighting conditions — very dark rooms reduce accuracy.

Handling transparent objects (glass, clear plastic) remains challenging as these are difficult for both camera-based and LiDAR-based detection.

Timeline for Mass Availability

This level of AI obstacle detection is currently available only in premium flagship models ($800+). The technology typically takes 18-24 months to cascade down to mid-range ($400-$700) models and 36 months for entry-level ($200-$400) robots.

By 2027-2028, expect most robot vacuums above $400 to have some form of AI obstacle identification.
