Everyone quotes the autonomy premium and nobody measures it, because the comparison is almost never clean: the robot and the machine it replaces come from different vendors, different catalogues and different quarters. On 14 August 2026 we found a catalogue where it is clean — a US Kärcher dealer that lists the manual floor machines and the autonomous KIRA machines side by side, all with live prices, all with the manufacturer's own rated throughput printed on the page. We priced every pair we could match, then checked the result against three other brands and against the one market where a government publishes both numbers.
The clean pairs

Both pairs are the same brand, bought from the same dealer on the same day, rated by the same manufacturer.
- Sticker ratio: 4.04x and 5.37x.
- Throughput-adjusted ratio: 3.69x and 3.81x — two independent pairs, 3.2% apart.
That second number is the one to carry. The autonomous machine is not appreciably faster: the KIRA B 50's rated throughput is 9.5% above the walk-behind's, and the KIRA BR 200's is 41.1% above the 34-inch walk-behind's, at 5.4x the price. You are paying roughly 3.7-3.8x per unit of rated cleaning capacity for the absence of an operator, and almost nothing you pay buys speed.
Priced the other way round: on a comparable floor machine, the machine itself is about 26-27% of what an autonomous unit costs, and the driverless part is the other three-quarters.
It is not "autonomy" that is expensive — it is autonomy on the same machine
The same catalogue contains a counter-example that flips the sign. The autonomous KIRA CV 50 BP vacuum sells for $12,999.00; the brand's manually driven Chariot CV 60/1 stand-on vacuum sells for $19,195.00. The robot is 32.3% cheaper than the human-driven machine.
Nothing mysterious is going on: the CV 50 is a small unit, and the stand-on is a large one with a rider on it. But it makes the rule explicit. The 3.7x premium appears when the autonomous product is the *same size machine made driverless*. Where the autonomous product is physically smaller than the manual machine it displaces, the premium can vanish or invert — and a buyer comparing catalogue lines rather than capacities will draw exactly the wrong conclusion in both directions.
Two other brands, same shape
- PUDU, from a US dealer's storefront the same day: the SH1 smart upright scrubber-dryer is $3,800.00; the autonomous CC1 floor robot is $22,000.00 — 5.79x.
- Kress, manufacturer's own US pricing: a commercial 21-inch self-propelled walk-behind mower is $799.99; the smallest RTKⁿ robotic mower is $1,499.99 — 1.88x — but the 3-acre KR233 at $5,999.99 is 7.50x the walk-behind. Mowing is the one case where the robot is priced against a machine that costs almost nothing, so the multiple depends entirely on which robot you pick.
Neither is throughput-matched, so treat them as the sticker ratio only. Both sit in or above the range the Kärcher pairs establish.
The extreme case: where the "manual" version is passive
The widest premiums we have measured are not in cleaning at all. They are in the one market that publishes both numbers to the cent — the US Medicare fee schedule, where powered and unpowered versions of the same device carry separate codes:

The pattern is consistent and, we think, explains itself: the multiple tracks how much machine already existed. Where the manual version is itself a $14,000-$16,000 powered machine with a brush, motors and batteries, adding autonomy multiplies the price by about four. Where the manual version is a passive mechanical part, the multiple runs 8-21x, because essentially the whole product is new. What the premium has to earn back
The KIRA B 50 premium over the equivalent walk-behind is $42,470. The BR 200 premium over the 34-inch walk-behind is $70,897. At a fully loaded labour cost of $25 to $45 an hour, those are 1,699 to 944 hours and 2,836 to 1,575 hours respectively — call it six to seventeen months of a single daily shift before the hardware difference is covered, before any service contract, and before allowing for the fact that an autonomous scrubber still needs a person to fill it, empty it and clear its exceptions.
That is our arithmetic, not a vendor's, and the wage range is deliberately wide because cleaning wages vary more than robot prices do. The useful part is the shape: a machine-for-machine premium of about four times is recoverable inside a year of single-shift use at plausible wages — and completely unrecoverable on a floor that only gets cleaned twice a week.
How to use this
- Compare capacity, not catalogue lines. Divide price by rated area performance for both machines. If the ratio is far from 3.5-4x, you are almost certainly comparing two different sizes of machine.
- Ask what the manual baseline actually is. Replacing a $16,000 powered walk-behind and replacing a mop are two different investment cases with the same word on the quote.
- Add the dock and the consumables to the robot side only if they are genuinely extra. The KIRA B 50's docking station is $3,195; the walk-behind does not need one, but it does need a person.
- Treat throughput parity as the null hypothesis. In both clean pairs here, autonomy bought availability, not speed.
