Four types of automatic pool cleaner are sold side by side in 2026, and the marketing for each is written as though the other three do not exist. This comparison sets them against each other on the four things that actually decide the purchase: what they clean, what they cost to buy, what they cost to run, and how long they last before you buy another one.
One caveat before the numbers, because it shapes how much weight anything here deserves. There is no Consumer Reports-grade independent lab rating of pool cleaners. Consumer Reports has no pool cleaner category; Rtings covers robot vacuums but nothing aquatic. The "best robotic pool cleaner" genre is affiliate content, and some of the most-cited comparison sites are themselves authorized dealers for the brand they rank first. Where owner forums are cited below it is because they are the best available evidence, not because they are laboratory-grade.
How the four types differ mechanically
The distinction that matters is not suction power. It is which direction each type loads your filtration system.
Cordless robots run on an onboard battery and are independent of the pool's plumbing entirely. Corded robots run on a low-voltage transformer — Hayward's SharkVac steps 115V down to 24V DC — and are likewise self-contained, filtering into their own basket. Pressure-side cleaners use a booster pump to drive water through venturi jets and collect debris in their own bag, which means they *add* roughly 40 GPM of circulation and keep leaves out of your pump basket. Suction-side cleaners run off the main pool pump's suction, which means everything they pick up lands in your pump basket and filter.
That last difference is the practical one. Pressure-side adds filtration capacity; suction-side consumes it; robots touch neither.
Coverage differs too. Robots of both kinds clean floor, walls and waterline — even sub-$500 cordless models now climb. Pressure-side does floor and walls but not the waterline. Suction-side does the floor and some wall climbing.

Pressure-side's headline price is misleading. A Polaris 280 needs a booster pump, and a bundled 280-plus-booster sells for about $1,050 — meaning the category's real entry point is above a corded robot's, not below it.
Running cost: the clearest data in the category
A PG&E laboratory study published through ENERGY STAR measured annual consumption across cleaner types, and it remains the only genuinely independent comparative energy data available:

Owner math on Trouble Free Pool corroborates the ratio, with one annual comparison putting a robot near $23/year against roughly $471/year for a pressure-side setup.
Two caveats. The study dates from 2010 and pre-dates variable-speed pump adoption, which likely narrows the suction-side gap. And no manufacturer publishes watt-hours for any cordless battery — they specify mAh without voltage, which makes cross-brand energy comparison impossible. Regulation is closing in on the booster pump regardless: most dedicated-purpose pool pump motors must be variable-speed by September 28, 2027.
Lifespan and repair economics
Here the ranking inverts, and it is the single most underweighted factor in this purchase.

Every 5-to-8-year robot figure traces to someone selling cleaners. Maytronics itself declines to give a number, saying only "years of service." Forum moderators describe a steady stream of dead-robot posts in the three-to-five year window.
The repair math is where robots lose outright. Maytronics' own parts store lists swivel cables up to $729.99 — more than its most expensive motor unit and within $20 of a complete new Nautilus CC Plus. The dominant robot failure is water ingress into the sealed motor pod, which is a total loss. Pressure-side is the mirror image: a 21-year-old Polaris 280 revived with a roughly $100 rebuild kit is a documented case, not an outlier.
Cordless adds a further ceiling. No manufacturer publishes a battery cycle count — not Beatbot, Aiper, Dolphin Liberty or Wybot. Maytronics sells a Liberty power pack at $499.99. Beatbot restricts battery service to qualified technicians. Aiper's batteries are non-replaceable per its own manual and its parts store sells none at all, which means on a 24-month warranty the battery is a hard lifespan limit with no manufacturer remedy after month 24. Aiper has also had two CPSC fire recalls — the Elite Pro in 2023 (~22,000 units) and the Seagull Pro in March 2025 (~32,660 US units, 19 reports of melting, smoking or fire while charging).
Which type for which pool
Heavy leaf and acorn load: pressure-side. This is where robots genuinely lose, and the constraint is volume, not pickup — owners put it plainly that a robot's basket fills. Suction-side chokes on anything larger than a quarter.
Vinyl liner: the damage mechanism is a cleaner getting stuck and wearing a hole, not abrasion in normal operation. Some owners argue robots are actually safer on vinyl because they finish faster and spend less time hung up.
Large pools past 40 feet: cordless runtime of two to four hours is reported as insufficient on 40,000+ gallon pools. Corded robot or pressure-side.
Above-ground, no nearby outlet, or moving between pools: cordless, and this is the case where its premium is justified.
Budget with an existing variable-speed pump: suction-side, run with an in-line leaf canister — the near-universal owner advice, because a clogged suction line is the failure everyone warns about.
Every type shares one weakness: slopes, deep-end hoppers and step corners. And a full filter basket makes any of them too heavy to climb, so "it stopped doing walls" is usually a maintenance state rather than a model defect.
Where the market is going
Robotic cleaners now hold a slight majority of the automatic-cleaner market on published estimates, though those figures come from report-selling firms rather than audited channel data. The structural evidence is stronger than the percentage: Polaris, a legacy pressure-side brand, now ships cordless robots — an incumbent cannibalizing its own line is the most meaningful signal available, and Pool Magazine's 2026 new-model roundup profiled ten models, all cordless, none corded.
Prices are bifurcating rather than falling. Wall and waterline climbing, a premium feature in 2024, is standard under $500 now; simultaneously the ceiling rose to $4,250 with Beatbot's self-emptying AquaSense X. Tariffs push the other way — pool equipment from China carries a 30% baseline plus a 25% Section 301 duty, while Israeli-made Maytronics sits outside that regime entirely and is nonetheless the brand discounting hardest, with instant rebates up to $630 through mid-2026.
The short answer
For a typical in-ground pool with moderate debris, a corded robot around $749 is the strongest all-round buy: best cleaning per kWh, full waterline coverage, and no battery to age out. Choose cordless only when the cord is a genuine constraint. Choose pressure-side if you have heavy leaf load and are willing to run a rebuild kit every few years in exchange for a cleaner that never really dies. Choose suction-side if budget dominates and you will fit a leaf canister.
